Is Koh Rong Island really the kind of paradise island everyone dreams of? Or is it simply overrated by the tourism authority and other marketing channels such as Instagram or other travel guides?
This question is entirely justified, because there aren't that many islands in Cambodia. In fact, only 4 islands every year from over 90 % visited by all tourists, and these numbers are only a fraction of that, which is normal in Thailand.

Koh Rong Island Hopping – Highlights and beaches

It was extremely hot, just like in Sihanoukville, but at least there was a light breeze. I walked along the beach path at Tui Beach looking for a hotel on the beach. Not only is the ferry pier located there, but also most accommodations, Restaurants, bars and shops.
Strandweg is actually the wrong word, for the path was completely unpaved and the sand was deep, so that you couldn't walk at a normal pace. But on the right there was a beautiful beach with perfectly clean, turquoise water, where I felt very comfortable and went swimming first.
Koh Rong Island Hotels at the Beach
I booked one of the Koh Rong Island hotels on the beach straight away. I don't even remember the name, there were no big signs or anything, I just know, that the owner was British and me 5 € discount on mine 30 € hotel, because I for 2 booked nights.
The Koh Rong Island hotels on the beach are actually some of the better ones on Koh Rong, but basically there isn't much in it, only one bed with mosquito net, a lamp, no sockets, Cell phones must be charged at the bar or, ideally, with a power bank. A trash can and a bathroom (Baderaum) with a cold shower, Toilet without flushing (Water bucket), sink and a mirror.
Prices for Koh Rong Island Hotels
Who wishes, can get some nicer hotels, such as at Monkey Island or Paradise Bungalows, but then you at least pay 75 per night for a slightly better standard.
Not really good value for money when it comes to hotels on Koh Rong Island, and since I intended, to have a few drinks in the evening and recover from my previous bumpy boat ride, I didn't really need much comfort anyway. By now it was already 16 Clock, so I stayed in my bungalow, enjoyed the beautiful view of the beach and walked around 17 Clock, swim in the sea just an hour before sunset.
After I came back from playing in the water, literally, I met a group of four Cambodians, who enthusiastically played with their plastic ball and invited me to join in, I showered and made my way back to the ferry dock, where most of the restaurants and bars are located.

Koh Rong Island Beaches – Tui Beach
As I already mentioned, I got pretty sick during the bumpy boat ride that night and was miserable in my hotel on Tui Beach for more than half of my second day.
It already was 16 Clock, when I felt a little better and got up from the bamboo chair on the terrace of my hotel on Tui Beach and decided, to take a walk to the second most famous place on Koh Rong Island: zum Long Set Beach.
Long Set Beach
Long Set Beach is located at the eastern end of Tui Beach. Then it goes up a small hill, where I discovered a very relaxed hotel resort in the middle of the lush rainforest and a tiny beach.
I continued to follow the path through the bush almost exactly 30 Minutes after I left my bungalow, I reached the western end of the mighty Long Set Beach.
Long Set Beach is about 2,5 km lang, therefore the name, and has very few more expensive resorts. Therefore, you will only see a few other vacationers around you, and you have the opportunity, to take beautiful paradisiacal photos.
From 17 It's a great place to watch the sunset there. The light is best at this time, provided, there are not that many clouds in the sky.
Koh Ronh Island Day Tours and Island Hopping

Another popular tourist activity on Koh Rong Island besides island hopping is this Ziplining inside the island. Just ask at one of the stalls on Tui Beach. Another nice place is the Sky Bar with a great view of the island.
At Sky Bar there are lots of steps leading up the hill and there are pretty fun and encouraging signs along the way and gorgeous views of Tui Beach, Koh Rong and the neighboring Koh Rong Samloem.
There is also a beautiful view point on the neighboring island of Sanloem. Quad tours (ADV) are also offered.

The island was quickly explored and everything was visited. In the bars on the beach you are more likely to meet young backpackers or Western temporary workers who work there, You can hardly find any local women.
A western father-son couple, which I met on my ferry ride back to Sihanoukville, was of the same opinion. Maximal 1 – 2 Nights are completely sufficient. To relax on the beautiful beaches and enjoy the peace and quiet.
