From Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville on your own with one Bus, From Mini Bus, Taxi or train. Flight connections and airport transfers.
From Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville by Bus
The easiest way to get from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is by bus. The Travel time amounts 4 - 5 Hours. There are also so-called Sleeper buses / Night buses offered, the something more comfort offer. I would also recommend booking a sleeper bus like this.
There you can lie down and relax and the sleeper buses are too Air-conditioned and offer a USB port and WIFI. I had paid €13 for my transfer from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville and had already done the whole thing online in advance 12go.asia* booked. All information about the departure and transfer will also be listed there and displayed on a Google Maps map.
In my case the departure point was this Virak Buntham office*. Another provider starts from Capitol Tours office. Both departure points are in the City von Phnom Penh and you have to get there yourself.
Van Mini Bus Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville
Another popular travel option to get from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is the Van Mini Bus (Sprinter).
This offers space for 12 persons and the travel time is around 3 Hours. However, it is very tight and also partially very warm in den Vans.
The prices for the transfer are around 18€ and you will be taken directly picked up at the hotel and you don't have to get to a departure point like with bus transfers.

Taxi Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville
The most convenient and fastest way to get from Phnom Penh City to Sihanoukville is by Taxi* or a private driver. The travel time is around 3 hours and costs around €130.
The taxi ride can be cheaper, provided you start from the airport. Since this is outside the city and saves a lot of time, because you don't have to drive through the heavy traffic in the center.
Train Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville
The longest and most complicated way to get there is by train. Very few tourists actually do this. The train goes from Phnom Penh to Kampot and then to Sihanoukville. There is a daily departure in each direction, the single fare is 9 € and the journey takes approximately 7 Hours.
You can find the current timetables on the website Cambodia Trains see. You don't need to buy tickets in advance, just go to the train station in either city. I have marked the locations on the map.
Phnom Penh Airport Transfer to Sihanoukville
Some western tourists don't even bother, to go to Phnom Penh City, when they land at the airport, above all, if it is your second or third trip and you have already experienced the capital and just want to get there as quickly as possible Sihanoukville beaches and want highlights.
The good news is, that the travel options from here are actually the fastest, that there are, but the bad news is, that it is a little more expensive, than if you start your journey from the city center.
That's why, that there are no minibuses, which stop at the airport on the way from the city center to Sihanoukville.
Flight Connections from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville
The journey from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville by plane only takes approximately 35 minutes. The two airlines that serve this route are as follows:
- Bayon Airlines
- Cambodia Angkor Air
Bayon Airlines tends to be a bit cheaper, but definitely not cheap. A one-way flight costs around €100, while the usual price for an economy seat on Cambodia Angkor Air is around €120.
Consider this, that Sihanoukville airport is far outside the city center (approximately 20 km), so you have to spend another 6€ for the shuttle bus or 20€ for a taxi.
Airport Transfer from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville
In the Airport arrival hall you will already from Addressed taxi driver and asked, wherever you want.
Tell the taxi drivers to Sihanoukville and they will give you an initial quote, normally 60 – 70USD. However, you don't have to pay that much, I would say, no more than 50 € are reasonable.
And look around, maybe there are other travelers, who want to make the same trip as you and with whom you can share the taxi. The journey is faster than by minibus or bus and takes approx 4 Hours.
